Capacitor, Contactor & Electrical Faults

Most air conditioners that stop working have not suffered anything dramatic. A ten-dollar component in the electrical path has failed, and the machine around it is entirely healthy — which is good news, provided somebody diagnoses it rather than guesses at it.

The Capacitor Does the Starting

A run capacitor stores the electrical kick that gets the compressor and the outdoor fan turning, and then helps keep them turning efficiently. It is the single most common failure in residential air conditioning, and in this climate it is a wear item rather than a defect.

The classic symptom is an outdoor unit that hums but does not spin, sometimes coupled with a fan blade you can start by hand with a stick — which is a diagnosis, not a repair, and a good sign the capacitor is finished. Weak capacitors also fail quietly, letting the compressor draw far more current than it should for months before anything stops.

  • Humming from the condenser with the fan sitting still
  • A fan that will run once nudged but cannot start on its own
  • Compressor amps well above the data plate figure at start-up
  • A capacitor visibly domed, split, or leaking from the top
  • Cooling that works in the morning and quits every afternoon as it heats up
  • A measured microfarad value more than six percent below the rating

Contactors, and Why Ants Matter

The contactor is the heavy switch that connects the outdoor unit to power when the thermostat calls. Its points arc every time it closes, and after several thousand cycles they either pit badly enough to stop conducting or weld together so the unit never shuts off.

A welded contactor is the reason a system sometimes runs continuously and freezes solid even with the thermostat satisfied. And in Central Florida there is a genuinely common second cause: fire ants are drawn to the electromagnetic field, get into the contactor housing, and bridge the contacts. It sounds absurd until you have opened one, and it is a routine find here.

Working Back Along the Circuit

When neither of those is the answer, the fault is somewhere along a path with a small number of links, and testing it in order is quicker than replacing parts hopefully. Voltage at the disconnect. Voltage at the contactor with the system calling. The low-voltage signal from the thermostat. The transformer output. The board.

A tripping breaker is treated as a warning rather than an inconvenience — it means something is drawing current it should not, and a breaker that has been reset repeatedly is protecting a fault that has been getting worse. That gets found before anything is put back into service. Nobody at St Cloud AC Repair will reset a breaker and leave.

Why the Cheap Part Is Worth Doing Properly

Capacitors and contactors cost very little, which tempts people into fitting whatever is on the shelf. A capacitor of roughly the right value, or one rated for a lower voltage than the system, will work for a while and then take the compressor with it.

So the replacement matches the specification — the correct microfarad value, the correct voltage rating, and a manufacturer worth having. On a part this cheap, the difference between the right one and the near-enough one is entirely labour, and it is the part you are actually paying for.

Questions We Get Asked

Can I change a capacitor myself?
We would rather you did not. A capacitor holds a charge after the power is off and is capable of injuring you, and fitting the wrong value quietly damages the compressor. If you are going to anyway, discharge it properly and match the rating exactly.
How long should a capacitor last?
Somewhere between five and ten years in this climate, and toward the shorter end on a system that runs most of the year. Measuring it annually is what turns an unexpected failure in August into a planned replacement in March.
The breaker keeps tripping. Can I just keep resetting it?
No. It is tripping because something is drawing current it should not, and each reset sends that fault current through the equipment again. Leave it off and call — a repeatedly reset breaker is how a capacitor problem becomes a compressor problem.
